Impact of Child Maltreatment: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Role in Risk, Resiliency, and Systems of Care
This Institute gives child and adolescent psychiatrists a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills needed to engage as leaders in the complex systems serving children and adolescents exposed to maltreatment. Participants learn how to mitigate the impact of maltreatment exposure and support resiliency from early childhood through young adulthood. The biological, psychological, and sociological impact of maltreatment on the developing child and adolescent is discussed. National experts on child maltreatment and systems of care present established and emerging science in the field, focusing on critical developmental periods and the connection between maltreatment and functional changes within the brain. The critical role of screening for maltreatment in the primary care setting, effective approaches to assessment, and recognition of when to seek a referral are discussed. Also covered are the factors that challenge successful transition into adulthood for children who have spent formative years within the foster care system.
