An Update in Psychopharmacology Relevant to Clinical Practice: Focus on Psychopathology Overlap With Mood Dysregulation
Psychiatric disorders affecting the pediatric population can co-occur with mood dysregulation, which often complicates diagnostic and treatment strategies. This Institute provides an update on psychopharmacology in the treatment of the major pediatric psychiatric disorders with emphasis on identifying and managing co-occurring mood dysregulation in autism spectrum disorders (ASD), refractory attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (BD), and substance use disorder (SUD). Recent research findings and non-research based clinical and anecdotal observations are presented in a clinically relevant manner. There is emphasis on identifying and managing metabolic adverse effects associated with mood stabilizers and second-generation antipsychotics. In addition, comprehensive evaluation of positive and negative adjunct therapies is given.
