Youth Cannabis Use: What the Busy Clinician Needs to Know
Adolescents are more likely than adults to initiate cannabis use, develop cannabis use disorder, and experience potentially lasting cannabis-associated adverse consequences. This Institute provides the clinician with valuable information about the physiology of the endogenous cannabinoid system; introduces the pharmacological underpinnings of the effects of cannabis and cannabinoid administration; and gives critical updates on evidence-based interventions to prevent, screen for, and treat cannabis use among youth. The interface between youth cannabis use and psychiatric conditions, including psychosis, is discussed. Youth cannabis-related terminology, formulations, and marketplace information helps clinicians understand the context in which young people obtain and use cannabis. Perspectives on communicating with patients and families about cannabis use are provided.
